Murali Chemuturi is one such individual—a man whose journey is not just about career progression, but about purpose, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of knowledge.
With a career spanning more than five decades, Murali’s story is deeply intertwined with India’s own evolution—from a developing nation full of promise to a global force in technology and innovation. Reflecting on his early years, he shares, “I was born at a time when India started its journey towards its rightful position among the comity of nations. The opportunities were plentiful and the challenges even more so.” This environment didn’t just shape his career—it fueled his drive to excel and contribute meaningfully.
From Engineering Roots to Technological Transformation
Murali began his professional journey at Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL) in Hyderabad, where he worked from 1970 to 1989. Starting as a Technical Assistant and eventually rising to Senior Technical Officer, he gained deep expertise in production and industrial engineering. These formative years laid a strong foundation, equipping him with discipline, analytical thinking, and a deep understanding of systems.
However, what truly set Murali apart was his ability to see beyond the present. At a time when information technology was still emerging, he recognized its potential to revolutionize productivity in manufacturing. “I saw a great opportunity to improve productivity vastly… and did a few game-changing innovations,” he recalls. This insight marked a turning point, leading him to transition into the IT industry.
His journey continued with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), where he worked on software development and data processing projects. Later, he rose to the position of Vice President of Software Development at Vistaar in Mumbai. Yet, even at the peak of his corporate career, Murali’s focus remained consistent—innovation, learning, and improvement.
Building a Legacy Through Knowledge Sharing
After concluding his corporate journey, Murali founded Chemuturi Consultants, where he began offering training in software engineering, management, and process development to clients across India and the United States. But his contributions extended far beyond consulting.
Murali is not just a practitioner of knowledge—he is a creator of it. He authored seven books on information technology and two on management, collectively spanning over 3,500 pages. These works have reached audiences across more than 20 countries and are used in over 60 universities worldwide. Reflecting on this achievement, he says with quiet pride, “My books went where I could not go.”
His intellectual contributions don’t stop there. He has also translated ancient Hindu epics—including the Ramayana, Mahabharata texts, and the Bhagavad Gita—into contemporary English, making timeless wisdom accessible to modern readers. This unique blend of technical expertise and philosophical depth sets Murali apart as a truly multidimensional thinker.
Facing Adversity with Courage and Integrity
Like any meaningful journey, Murali’s path was not without challenges. One of the most difficult phases came during his time at TCS, when organizational changes in the 1990s significantly impacted his career. Leaving the organization marked the beginning of a tough period.
“I suffered for three years,” he admits candidly. “But I faced that challenge squarely… depending on my integrity and courage.” During this time, During this time, he even had to resort to legal action on TCS —an experience that tested both his resilience and conviction.
Rather than allowing setbacks to define him, Murali chose to respond with perseverance. He continued to work, learn, and rebuild. His determination eventually paid off, restoring both his reputation and confidence. His journey through adversity stands as a powerful reminder that true strength lies in persistence and self-belief.
Redefining Success: A Multi-Dimensional Perspective
Murali’s perspective on success challenges conventional thinking. While many associate success with wealth or high positions, he views it through a broader, more meaningful lens.
“For me, success is multi-dimensional,” he explains. It includes innovation, contribution to knowledge, development of people, and the sharing of knowledge. He also emphasizes personal responsibilities, such as caring for family and ensuring the well-being of loved ones.
At the heart of his philosophy is a belief in knowledge as a shared resource. Quoting Rabindranath Tagore, he says, “Where knowledge is free,” highlighting his commitment to making learning accessible. His work reflects this belief—whether through books, consulting, or mentorship, he continues to give back to the community.
A Thoughtful View on the Future of Technology
Having witnessed decades of technological evolution, Murali offers a balanced perspective on the future. He identifies automation and artificial intelligence as transformative forces, but he also raises important concerns.
“These are both a boon and a bane,” he notes, pointing out the unintended consequences of over-reliance on technology, including its impact on human health and societal priorities. He believes that while businesses focus on customer preferences, governments and institutions must consider what is truly beneficial for society.
His reflections go beyond technology—they touch on ethics, responsibility, and the need for thoughtful leadership in a rapidly changing world.
Leadership Rooted in Ethics and Responsibility
Murali’s views on leadership are grounded in timeless principles. He believes that while circumstances may change, the core traits of leadership remain constant.
“Each leader… must be ethical and honest,” he emphasizes. He also highlights the importance of protecting sincere individuals, ensuring fairness, and maintaining resilience. In his view, leadership is not about authority—it is about responsibility and integrity.
His philosophy reflects a deep understanding of human values, reminding us that effective leadership is as much about character as it is about capability.
A Continuing Journey of Purpose
At 75, Murali speaks with remarkable clarity and humility about the future. “I am a man with a past and not a future,” he says candidly. Yet, his actions tell a different story.
He continues to translate ancient texts, share his knowledge, and contribute in meaningful ways. Free from the pursuit of titles or recognition, he is focused on what truly matters—leaving behind knowledge, wisdom, and impact.
