Beyond the Trade: Philip Jayhawk Chan on Financial Independence, Transparency and Empowering the Next Generation of Investors

For many professionals, financial success is measured by income, career progression or the size of an investment portfolio. For Philip Jayhawk Chan, those measures tell only part of the story. His own journey began far from the world of futures and commodities trading. At the University of Kansas, he initially followed a pre-med path, studying neurobiology, molecular biosciences, and East Asian languages and culture. Medicine offered a conventional sense of direction, but the more closely he observed the profession, the more he noticed another reality: talented people could build impressive careers while still feeling financially constrained and overwhelmed.

That realization eventually changed the course of his life. Today, as President & CEO of Lightspeed Investing, Philip has built a business around a different approach to financial education. Rather than positioning investing as an exclusive discipline reserved for financial experts, he wants professionals to understand how markets work, how decisions are made and, ultimately, how they can take greater control of their financial futures. For Philip, the numbers matter, but what those numbers allow people to do with their lives matters more.

The Moment the Direction Changed

Philip’s decision to leave the conventional path was not driven by a single desire to enter finance. It came from seeing a problem he felt compelled to address. He watched highly educated, hardworking professionals, particularly doctors, struggle with financial exposure despite earning strong incomes. Their professional success did not necessarily translate into financial independence.

“That reshaped how I think about leadership,” Philip explains. “It’s not enough to build something profitable. You have to build something that actually changes the trajectory of the people you serve.”

That distinction became central to his philosophy. Growth alone was not enough. The real measure of success would be the number of people whose financial lives became more informed, confident and independent because of the work he was doing. His academic journey evolved alongside that purpose. After moving away from medicine, Philip completed a Master of Science in Applied Statistics, Analytics, and Data Science at the University of Kansas Medical Center, giving him an analytical foundation that continues to influence how he approaches markets.

Building a Different Kind of Investment Experience

At Lightspeed Investing, Philip has sought to challenge one of the most persistent assumptions surrounding investing: that people must either become financial experts themselves or hand their money to someone else and trust the process from a distance.

He believes there is another option: transparency.

“Numbers and returns are the byproduct, not the point,” he says. “What we’re really doing is closing a gap in financial education.”

That philosophy is reflected in the company’s approach to education. Rather than keeping the mechanics of trading behind closed doors, Lightspeed goes live and demonstrates how trades are made in real time, allowing professionals to see the reasoning behind decisions rather than simply receiving a statement at the end of the month. For Philip, that openness is central to genuine empowerment. His philosophy is straightforward: access matters more than exclusivity. While the team now manages more than $530 million and has served clients for more than fifteen years, Philip says the objective has never been simply to accumulate assets under management. He is more interested in making sophisticated trading knowledge accessible to people who may previously have considered it out of reach.

Leadership Through Transparency

That same principle shapes Philip’s approach to leadership. Within the organization, transparency and integrity are not simply values written on a page. They influence how the team teaches, communicates and interacts with clients.

“I want our team to treat every client the way we’d want to be treated if the roles were reversed,” he says, emphasizing honesty about risk and avoiding overpromising.

For Philip, trust is built by being willing to show the process, including its uncertainties. That is particularly important in an industry where people can be tempted by promises of certainty. He has found that professionals who achieve lasting success tend to approach investing as a skill rather than a shortcut.

“They show up consistently, they ask questions, and they’re willing to be a beginner in a new discipline even though they’re already highly accomplished in their own field.”

The mindset matters because markets offer no guarantees. Patience, discipline and consistency are more valuable than searching for the perfect trade.

Principles That Outlast Technology

Financial markets are changing rapidly. Technology continues to reshape access to information, trading platforms are evolving, and investor expectations are becoming more sophisticated. Yet Philip believes the most important principles remain remarkably stable.

“Discipline and transparency will never go out of style,” he says.

Tools will change, information will move faster, and new technologies will continue to alter how investors interact with markets. Sound decision-making, responsible risk management and intellectual honesty, however, remain essential. That last principle is particularly important to Philip: knowing what you know, recognizing what you do not know and being honest about the difference. It is a philosophy that leaves room for new tools and approaches without losing sight of the fundamentals.

A Broader Definition of Success

Over time, Philip’s own definition of success has changed. Early in his career, success meant proving that the business could work. Today, the measure is more personal. It is reflected in the professionals who tell him that their financial stress has eased because they finally understand what is happening with their money.

That evolution recently earned recognition beyond Lightspeed’s own client base. In August 2026, the International Association of Top Professionals named Philip Top Leader of the Year in Financial Empowerment, citing his commitment to financial education and his work helping professionals build lasting financial independence. For Philip, the honor is less a milestone in itself than confirmation that the approach is reaching the people it was built for.

“What motivates me now is watching people who started exactly where I once did gain real confidence and independence.”

That shift from proving to serving is perhaps the clearest sign of Philip’s evolution as a leader. Business growth still matters, but it is no longer the only destination. The larger goal is to create meaningful change in the lives of the people the business serves. That philosophy also extends beyond Lightspeed Investing. Through Leadership Visions International, Philip mentors entrepreneurs and business leaders, continuing his commitment to helping people develop greater clarity and control over their professional and financial futures.

Building What Lasts

Philip’s vision is not simply about growing a company. It is about building an enduring philosophy around access, education and transparency. He wants the work to be remembered not because it kept knowledge exclusive, but because it opened the door.

“I’d want them to remember that I chose transparency when it would have been easier to keep things behind closed doors,” he says, “and that I built something aimed at giving people access rather than gatekeeping it.”

That may be the most meaningful thread in Philip’s journey. He began by questioning a conventional definition of success and went on to build a career around helping others question theirs. His work in markets is grounded in statistics and analysis, but his larger purpose is human: helping people understand their financial choices well enough to make better ones.

For Philip Jayhawk Chan, wealth is not simply about returns. It is about understanding, confidence and the freedom that comes when people feel they have greater control over their own future.
