Leading with Purpose: How Tina Newsome-Lee Is Redefining Leadership Through Justice, Inclusion, and Empowerment

Some careers begin with ambition. Others begin with purpose. For Tina Newsome-Lee, purpose has been the driving force behind every professional milestone, leadership opportunity, and person she has chosen to mentor along the way.

Long before becoming a respected executive in the insurance industry, Tina envisioned herself standing in courtrooms advocating for justice. Inspired by the life and legacy of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, she dreamed of becoming a lawyer who could use the law to create opportunities for those whose voices often went unheard. Growing up in an impoverished environment, she understood firsthand what it meant to be underestimated and judged by circumstances rather than potential. Rather than allowing those experiences to define her future, she turned them into motivation. Today, as Vice President and National Practice Lead at Travelers, Tina combines legal expertise, business strategy, and people-centered leadership to guide teams through complex legal and operational environments. Despite her executive title, she remains grounded in the same purpose that inspired her career from the very beginning: helping people reach their full potential.

A Defining Moment Beyond the Courtroom

Although Tina always knew she wanted to become a lawyer, she never imagined leadership would become one of the defining aspects of her career.

“My path to leadership was accidental,” she reflects. “It was borne out of a desire to help others reach their potential.”

Rather than chasing leadership roles, she concentrated on developing people, supporting colleagues, and creating positive outcomes wherever she worked. Those efforts did not go unnoticed. As others recognized her ability to mentor, influence, and inspire, new opportunities naturally followed. Looking back, Tina sees leadership as something earned through service rather than authority, a philosophy that has shaped every stage of her professional journey.

Building Confidence to Lead

Even accomplished professionals experience moments of self-doubt, and Tina was no exception. Nearly seven years into her tenure at Travelers, despite being an experienced attorney with strong communication skills, she found herself hesitant to speak confidently in large corporate settings. Determined to overcome that challenge, she joined a local Toastmasters club. Over the course of a year, she committed herself to delivering prepared speeches, participating in impromptu speaking exercises, and consistently pushing beyond her comfort zone. By the end of the program, she had earned her Competent Communicator designation and, more importantly, developed a new level of confidence.

“In many ways, I credit this Toastmasters journey as a game changer because I learned how to get out of my own way and show up fully.”

The experience reinforced a lesson she now shares with aspiring leaders: confidence is rarely something people are born with. It grows through practice, courage, and a willingness to embrace discomfort. Another significant milestone followed when she earned the prestigious CPCU designation, widely regarded as the premier professional credential within the insurance industry. Coming from an English and legal background rather than business, the qualification broadened her understanding of insurance operations while complementing her legal expertise. Together, these experiences strengthened her ability to make informed strategic decisions across both legal and business functions.

Leading with Inclusion and Integrity

Throughout her career, Tina has faced challenges that extended well beyond technical expertise. As a Black woman in executive leadership, she has often encountered assumptions about what leadership should look like.

“I have always been told that I will have to work twice as hard to receive half the recognition.”

Rather than allowing those experiences to discourage her, she used them to shape the kind of leader she wanted to become. They strengthened her commitment to inclusion, fairness, and creating opportunities for others who may also feel overlooked.

“I am intentional about inclusion and ensuring that no one is left out.”

That commitment is evident in the way she develops talent, mentors emerging professionals, and fosters workplace cultures where people feel respected, supported, and genuinely valued.

Bringing Law, Business, and Strategy Together

One of Tina’s greatest strengths lies in her ability to connect legal expertise with strategic business thinking.

Insurance is built on understanding, assessing, and managing risk, and her legal background provides valuable perspective when navigating complex regulatory environments while balancing broader organizational objectives. Rather than treating legal considerations as barriers, she views them as opportunities to make thoughtful, informed decisions that protect both people and business outcomes. She believes organizational success depends just as much on culture as it does on strategy. Quoting management expert Peter Drucker, she often reminds leaders, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.”

For that reason, she places trust, accountability, transparency, and continuous learning at the center of every team she leads. The Golden Rule remains one of her guiding leadership principles.

“I treat others the way I want to be treated—with respect, kindness, grace and mercy.”

It is a philosophy that encourages people not simply to perform but to invest sincerely in one another’s success.

Preparing Leaders for the Future

As artificial intelligence rapidly transforms industries around the world, Tina sees enormous opportunity alongside an equally important responsibility. She believes technologies such as generative AI will improve efficiency, streamline repetitive work, and enhance productivity across legal and insurance operations. At the same time, she is convinced organizations must resist allowing technology to replace genuine human connection.

“Organizations often say that people are their greatest asset. As we move towards greater technological adoption, it will be crucial that we keep people at the center of work.”

For Tina, the organizations best positioned for the future will be those that balance innovation with empathy, ensuring technological progress strengthens rather than diminishes workplace culture.

A Legacy Built Through Others

When asked what advice she would offer future attorneys, insurance professionals, and business leaders, Tina’s response reflects the values that have guided her entire career.

“Work extremely hard and learn to lead yourself first before you try to lead others.”

She also encourages professionals to remain lifelong learners, not only by expanding their technical knowledge but by staying curious about people and their experiences. One quote continues to shape her leadership philosophy:

“Before people care about what you know, they first want to know that you care.”

That belief captures the essence of Tina Newsome-Lee’s journey. Her career has never been defined solely by titles, legal expertise, or executive leadership. Instead, it has been shaped by service, mentorship, and an unwavering commitment to helping others succeed.

In a business landscape increasingly defined by technology, speed, and constant change, Tina reminds us that the strongest organizations are still built by leaders who choose compassion over ego, inclusion over exclusion, and purpose over personal recognition. Leadership, at its best, is measured not by how many people follow you, but by how many people grow because you chose to lead.
